Retouching Your Portraits involves the process and delicate art of removing imperfections from the skin using software like Photoshop Elements 8. However, when it comes to the subject of Retouching it can involve more than just getting rid of a few pimples. Retouching Your Portraits is quite a broad topic that can extend to other areas such as digital makeup, reshaping the the nose and more.

We all know how important it is to take care of our skin, but on the odd occasion our skin is going to rebel no matter how much we look after it!

So to get you started on the right foot, I want to share some basic Photo Retouching techniques that starts off with getting your skin right, whitening your eyes and fixing your hair.

So without further ado… Lets get started.
Obliterate Spots – The Healing Brush is a great tool when it comes to Retouching Portraits. Easily correct blemishes, get rid of pimples and any other unsightly spot that shouldn’t be there.
The action is as simple as choosing the healing brush from the toolbox, adjusting the size so that it is a bit bigger than the spot you want to eliminate, click on an area close to the spot holding down the alt key, on release of the alt key click back on the spot for the magic to begin!

Airbrush Away Shiny Patches – Retouching Your Portraits with the Airbrushing technique is particularly useful for larger areas. An example I use is shiny patches on the skin. This Retouching technique is very similar to the healing brush. It is advisable to reduce the Opacity in this technique. This helps to keep the effect subtle.

Digital Hair Fix – We are all bombarded someway or another with images that portray us with bits of fly-away hair. If those straggly bits of hair are getting in the way of a near picture-perfect image than worry no more, for there is a way to rectify this after the shutter has been released! The Clone Stamp tool is the tool for the job to help you out in this dilemma.

Say No To Red-Eye – Doesn’t red-eye pictures annoy the heck out of you! Whether your caught with red-eye or the whites of your eyes have that funny discoloration the method used to help fix the problem is as easy as the rest of the examples in this post. Don’t put up with eye discoloration any longer. By using the Polygonal Lasso to make a selection around the whites of the eyes, Refining the Edge and using Hue/Saturation you no longer have to put up with Red, dull or discolored whites any longer!
